Definition and Classification of MSME Registration

Micro, small, and medium enterprises are a very important sector in the economy of any country. Depending on the investment and turnover, the enterprise is classified.

  • Micro Enterprises: Businesses with plant and machinery/equipment having a capital investment of less than ₹1 crore; with an annual turn-over of less than ₹ 5 crores are categorized as Micro Enterprises. Such enterprises are characterized as generally small scale or even family oriented, and it is such small-scale enterprises that employ major population segments of the economy.
  • Small Enterprises: This enterprise has investment in plant and machinery or equipment up to ₹10 crores and annual turnover up to ₹50 crores. Small enterprises are more formal than micro-enterprises and tend to operate within local or regional markets.
  • Medium Enterprises: The size is comparatively bigger than small scale. In regards to investment done in plant and machinery or other equipment, ₹50 crores is the value and annual sales of up to ₹250 crores. Large market share lies with medium-scale enterprises, they can compete in their own country markets as well at the international front.

 

Eligibility

This MSME Registration is open to all types of business entities are:

  • Proprietorship: It is a one-person business entity. The owner has personal liability to all debts and obligations of the business.
  • Partnership: A firm owned by two or more individuals. Profits, losses, and responsibilities are shared among them.
  • Limited Liability Partnership (LLP): This is a partnership that has the characteristics of both partnership and corporate entities. Here, the liability of the partners is limited.
  • Private Limited Company: A corporate body with limited liability for its shareholders, offering protection of personal assets and separation of ownership and management.
  • Other business entities: Cooperatives, societies, and other forms of business organizations.

 

Advantages of MSME Registration

MSME registration provides numerous advantages that can highly improve the growth and development of businesses:

  1. Schemes and Subsidies from Government Access: A lot of schemes offered by the government are provided to registered MSMEs such as Credit Guarantee Fund Scheme, Micro and Small Enterprises Cluster Development Programme, etc.
  2. Priority Sector Lending: The banks and other financial organizations offer priority sector lending to the MSME. It is easier access with lower interest rates.
  3. Incentives on Electricity Bills, ISO Certification, and Patent Registration: A registered MSME can enjoy incentives on electricity bills, refund of ISO certification, and registration for patents with some concession.
  4. Easy Access to Government Tenders: MSME is favored in government tenders. Its requirement is mostly not stringent and also not too competitive among big companies.

 

Documents Required for Registration as an MSME

Normally, these documents are required for registration as an MSME:

  1. Aadhar Card of the Proprietor: The main identifying document of the proprietor.
  2. PAN Card of the Business: PAN is a compulsory number for tax purposes.
  3. Any Utility Bills, Rent Agreement and/or Property Tax receipt related to the business address.
  4. Bank Account and Financial Statements: Details and recent financial statements of the bank account of the business clearly showing its financial status.

 

Registration Procedure

The process of registering an MSME is quite easy and can be done online.

  • Registration through the Udyam Registration Portal: This is the sole official window to register for an MSME. One can apply by providing relevant details and documents.
  • Submission of a Self-Declaration Form: One has to submit a self-declaration form declaring the working, financials, and ownership details of the business.
  • No Registration Fees: Registration as an MSME is free for all the business that qualifies under MSME.

 

Compliance and Reporting

Registered MSMEs are subjected to some reporting and regulatory requirements:

  • The submission of Annual Financial Statements and Turnover Reports: Businesses must submit their annual financial statements and reports on turnover to be in compliance with MSME regulations.
  • Adherence to Sector-Specific Regulations and Standards: MSMEs are expected to adhere to sector-specific regulations and standards to ensure quality, aligning with legal requirements.
